We know bridges
…and we’re the experts when it comes to launching monitoring technologies to help our customers manage their bridges more effectively.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a vital part of comprehensive bridge asset management. With it, we can improve risk and safety management, measure deterioration, and supply an improved maintenance schedule for your asset.
We’re independent. We use the right monitoring technology for each unique application, using data from any source and entering it into our bespoke SAMS™ software platform.
Structural Health Monitoring For:
New Bridges
SHM is often necessary for new bridges:
- To supply up-to-date reports for unplanned events like weather related incidents, earthquakes, impacts from transport or even overloaded vehicles.
- To monitor components that caused issues in earlier designs, like foundation settlement.
- To record the use of key elements, like bearings, so that when replacements are needed, you already have the specific requirements.
- To provide long term performance information of your bridge.
Existing Bridges
SMH is normally needed for existing bridges when a problem arises, like:
- Defects, including cracking or bearing faults.
- Vulnerable details, such as the wear down of post-tensioned concrete structures, concrete half-joints, or other hidden defects.
- Load capacity when a bridge fails its numerical assessment.

Innovation
We innovate and are proud to have contributed to the bridge monitoring world. This includes sensor technologies, visualisation, and data management. Recently, we contributed to an InnovateUK funded research project with our partners, and produced ‘SmartBridge,’ which was a digital twin combining deterioration and element analysis models with SHM.
Monitoring Systems
We’re proud to be independent. This means that we don’t work with equipment manufacturers because our team of specialists have the expertise to know which technology an application needs, each and every time.
Measurements we take include deflection, acceleration, displacement, strain, settlement, acceleration, temperature, inclination, wind speed and direction, relative humidity, pressure, visibility, rainfall, sunshine.
We also work with third party systems – GNSS, Automatic Total Station, Dynamic Weigh-in-Motion, Acoustic Emission Monitoring, and Corrosion. We then integrate the data into our SAMS™ platform, so that our customers have one interface where they can access information from multiple monitoring hardware systems, and even across multiple bridges. Rest assured, all analysis and reports are collated and can be accessed from the same interface.
