REQUEST YOUR KITAutomotive oil analysis can give you lots of information about the condition of your vehicle way before there are any visible signs. Getting an in-depth report with recommendations is the easiest and most effective way to find out what condition your engine is in and how it’s wearing. Automotive oil analysis does not only highlight any issues, it can also indicate the root causes.
Why should you undertake Automotive Oil Analysis on your vehicle?
- Detect wear in your petrol or diesel engine
- Check the condition of the gearbox (manual/automatic)
- Pre-empt any maintenance that may need to be done
- Assess any issues that may have already risen and find out the cause
- Determine the severity of any problems
- Save money by catching an issue in its infancy allowing you to rectify the problem before the asset fails
- Avoid expensive and inconvenient breakdowns
- Save time by not having to diagnose the problems yourself
- Ascertain what is the correct oil for your vehicle

WHAT ENGINE OIL TESTS DO WE DO?
TEST | DESCRIPTION | ASTM |
---|---|---|
Visual Inspection (VI) | Our laboratory analysts will visually inspect the sample for debris, wear particles and any unusual characteristics. | |
Ferrous Wear (FW) Content | This test quantifies the magnetic debris within the sample irrelevant of particle size. Unusual results from this test may point to contamination or wear occurring in the engine. High results can also suggest poor sampling methods. | D8184 |
Elemental Analysis | This test quantifies additives, contaminants, and wear particles below 10um in size. The additive levels will allow our analysts to determine if the lubricant is fit for continued use. The contaminant levels such as dirt or coolant will allow our analysts to diagnose any issues. The wear levels will allow analysts to pinpoint component wear. | D7303-12 + D 5185-13e14 |
Viscosity at 40 degrees celsius (100 degrees and VI if required) | This test allows analysts to confirm the grade of lubricant is physically correct. Unusual viscosity results can point to incorrect grades, contamination, or lubricant degradation. | D7279-14A |
Hot Plate Water (VKF) | This test is a screening test to check for water. If the test is positive a more in-depth VKF is performed to calculate the percentage of water in the sample. | E203-16 |
Total Insoluble Matter (TIM) / Soot | The TIM allows the total amount of soot in the sample to be calculated allowing the soot loading to be trended. Unusual amounts of soot are usually caused by combustion issues. | D7899-13 |
Total Acid Number (TAN) | Any degradation or wear within the system can initiate acid build up which is combated by the alkaline reserve within the lubricant. Monitoring the TAN allows our analysts to diagnose overheating, extreme degradation, or wear and sludge or varnish. | D66411A + D974-14E02 |
Total Base Number (TBN) | The TBN analysis quantifies the amount of alkaline reserve left in the system to help neutralize the acid build up and any varnish or sludge. Monitoring the TBN gives a good indicator when oil changes are required. | D4739-2011 |
FTIR | Infrared spectroscopy analysis allows our analysts to calculate oxidation, soot and any chemical changes within the lubricant. | E2412 |
